PAUL ANDESHI ADAH(KSM): SEASONED ADMINISTRATOR ON A MISSION TO RESCUE CROSS RIVER STATE

More than ever before in the history of Cross River State especially in the present democratic dispensation that would enter an unprecedented 20year stretch on the 29th of May 2019, Cross River state has never been more unanimous in its quest to reverse the state's steady drift towards zero governance.

Unarguably Cross River State post 1999 was blessed with an emerging youthful political leadership that apparently came on board with a discernable blueprint backed with a mission and the necessary youthful vigor to turn around the status of the state that had tragically attracted the toga of a civil service state among the comity of states in Nigeria.
Credit must go to the first post military administration, headed by Mr Donald Duke in 1999 for giving the state a clear direction of its development options as well as bequeathing the state a distinct identity in the Nigerian nation.

Duke's administration no doubt created a direction for Cross River State's sustainable development which would certainly have moved the state inexorably forward continuously if the Cross River State project had successive leaders who shared in the vision.

Incidentally, Duke had conceptualized his vision for the development of Cross River after his short stint as a commissioner of finance in the truncated tenure of Chief Clement Ebri. Invariably therefore Duke using his sharp intellect was able to assimilate knowledge on the workings of Government which ultimately aided the implementation of his development agenda for the State.

Senator Liyel Imoke who was also a victim of the ill fated transition programme of General Babangida went ahead to serve in various capacities as Special Adviser and Minister in Obasanjo's administration between 1999-2007 before ultimately becoming the Governor of Cross River State between 2007-2015.

The experience of Duke and Imoke in governance before their ascension to the number one position in Cross River as successive Chief executives of the state invariably contributed to the cohesive, robust and focused governance they both provided for Cross River State.

On the contrary, the last three years have sprung up a weird form of governance that has thrown Cross Riverians into nostalgic hallucination. From the monthly celebration of statutory salary payments to the media hype of non-existent development projects; From the abandonment of inherited projects to the inability to pursue newly initiated projects to the logical conclusion; From the infantile theatrics being displayed as digital governance to the total abandonment of the civil service as the engine room of the implementation of government programmes, Cross Riverians have never stopped gnashing their teeth as to how a state that was on course to becoming a modern cosmopolitan city state has allowed itself to be so brazenly raped by a leadership that its citizenry supposedly elected to govern them.

Against this background, and as 2019 steadily approaches it has become more than ever necessary for Cross Riverians to take their destinies in their hands..

As 2019 draws closer with contenders wanting to replace incumbent Governor Ben Ayade for a popularly accepted clamour for the rescue of Cross River State, Cross Riverians must be fascinated by the resume of Hon Paul Andeshi Adah who has thrown his hat into the ring.

Born less than a month into Nigeria's independence in 1960 at Betukwel village Obudu Local Government Area to the Adah family, Paul Adah has never been a lackey. From his early primary education in St Anthony primary school, Alege Obudu LGA, through the St Benedict primary school and back to St Anthony Primary school, Alege in Obudu where he ultimately completed his primary education, Paul exemplified academic excellence.

Between 1974 and 1978 he was done with his Secondary education at the famous Mary knoll college, Okuku Yala Local Government Area finishing with a grade one certificate in WAEC of 1978. He gained admission into the university of Calabar in 1980 and duely graduated with a BA(Hon)s Education in 1984. He was to promptly add an MA to his first degree in 1988 shortly after the compulsory one year National service.

Paul plunged into the public service thereafter taking appointment as a Secondary school teacher between 1986-1989 when he transferred his services to the Unified Local Government service of Cross River State as Administrative officer 1 grade level 09. He had a meteoric rise in the unified service from then on and held virtually all the high ranking administrative positions including; secretary traditional Rulers council Obudu LGA Director of Administration; Etung Local Government Area and co-ordinating Director Yala Local Government Area amongst other high profile assignments in the various Local Government Areas he served across the State.

In search of a bigger platform to serve his people Paul took a bold step and voluntarily disengaged from the Unified Local Government Service in 2003 and joined partisan politics. He shocked high profile politicians in the Obudu, Obanliku and Bekwarra federal constituency when in his very first attempt at seeking an elective position, he won as member representing Obudu, Obanliku and Bekwarra federal constituency in the National Assembly. He was to repeat the same feat in 2007 winning a second term in spite of high wired conspiracy and intrigues within the top hierarchy of the then PDP state led government to stop him. These same entrenched forces within the PDP eventually truncated his ambition to transcend to the upper chambers of the National assembly in 2011 when the skewed PDP primaries at Ogoja they denied him the ticket of the Northern Cross River senatorial district. The result of that conspiracy is what has led to the present agony of Cross Riverians under the current administration.

He was not away from the political limelight for long as President Jonathan appointed him as Cross River State representative on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission in 2013 where he was until that Board was dissolved by the new administration in 2015.

Significantly, it is Paul's impact on the various positions he has superintended in the public service that has made him so attractive to his people.

Paul Adah is a quintessential public servant who is approachable, cerebral, charismatic and result oriented; virtues that made him a household name in the unified Local Service. As a parliamentarian he impacted positively on his constituents. It is on record that he introduced empowerment programmes in the history of representation in the present democratic dispensation in Northern senatorial district. As vice chairman house committee of the Independent National Electoral Commission, a lot of Cross Riverians now gainfully employed by the commission owe their jobs to him.

Significantly however as Cross Riverians pray for a reliable personality to retrieve the governance of the state from the vice-like clutches of the present emperor, Paul Adah's profile perfectly fits that bill.

Cross Riverians will require the enormous experience of Mr Adah in both legislative and executive panache as he has demonstrated in the past to refocus Cross River State on the path of sustainable development.

From all angles therefore, Paul Adah whose catch phrase is PAUL FOR ALL, ALL FOR PAUL has the academic, administrative, legislative as well as physical and mental ability to lead Cross River State out of its present doldrums.

Uproar As Herdsmen And Itigidi Community Clash

The disagreement between Fulani herdsmen and the local community, appears to be at the center of the pandemonium that is presently rocking the community.

We gather that the herdsmen confronted some youths in the community after alleging that two cows were in the area. The ensuing conflict is believed to have attracted security operatives from nearby Ugep, who swiftly moved in to put the situation under control. Tension is said to have heightened when some Itigidi chiefs were arrested and taken to the police station in Ugep.

Irked by this development, some youths in the area are believed to have confronted security agents drafted to the area. We were unable to ascertain at press time if the resultant death of one Itigidi youth resulted from this confrontation with security agents, even though sources in the area claim the youths tried to disarm the security agents.

As we report, Itigidi, hometown of former governor of Cross River State , Liyel Imoke, has not gone to sleep as indigenes of the area appear to have sworn that the herdsmen cannot destroy their farmland and be responsible for the death of an indigene of the area. In Ediba, another community close to Itigidi, one prominent indigene who spoke with www.calitown.com, late Monday night, maintained that,

“we are alert because these herdsmen seemingly have no regard for our land and crops. They think they have a right over our land and can take their cows anywhere. What has just happened in Itigidi is a pointer to this fact. We hope government can swiftly wade into this matter or those of us in neighbouring communities will have to forcefully stand up for ourselves, against these strangers with no regard for communities where their cows graze.”

Late into the night, police and government sources were unavailable for comments. We could not ascertain too, if the arrested chiefs have been released.

Police In CRS Intensify Search For Missing Rifle In Itigidi

The Police high command in Cross River State has intensified efforts to recover the service rifle snatched in Itigidi, Abi Local Government Area, during Monday's bloody clash between youths in the area and suspected herdsmen.

Top police sources contacted maintain that the rifle was snatched from one of their men who was part of a team of policemen drafted to the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order in Itigidi. We also gathered that, John Gaul Lebo, Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, CRSHA, is spearheading efforts aimed at recovering the rifle. Lebo, who we also gathered has been in constant touch with the state police high command, has scheduled a meeting with Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwa and leaders of thought in the area to assure the CP that the rifle will be found and returned to the police. The meeting will also seek to work out agreeable modalities to ensure that lasting peace returns to the area.

Liyel Imoke, former governor of Cross River State, an indigene of the community, has expressed his disappointment and regrets at the youths/police face-of while suing for calm.

Recall that Monday’s clash left one Itigidi Chief dead and a gale of protests that nearly led to the burning of the police station in the area.

Folarin Falana fondly called by his stage name, Falz The Bahd Guy, has said he has a lot of pressure on him to get married.

According to him, when Adesua and Banky got married, he took a deep thought about his personal life and said he thinks he will get married anytime from now.

In a recent chat, he mentioned that the number of Nigerian celebrities that are getting married is now making bachelorhood so uncomfortable and he feels it is high time he also walked into that same direction.

Falz says,

“In recent past, people have been putting me under a lot of pressure to get ready. When Banky W and Adesua got married last year and it almost broke the Internet, it put a lot of pressure on bachelors like me. Everybody is getting married; so, I think it’s high time for me.”

The rapper also recounted on an accident he had back in 2013 – an ordeal he says that almost claimed his life.

He says,

“In November 2013, I had a terrible accident. It was a near-death experience and I was in the vehicle with my management team. The accident was caused by an armed robbery. We were on the highway when suddenly the car was shot at. The driver was killed and we ended up in a ditch. I sustained injuries and the visible scars on my body are from that day.

“I really thought it was the end, especially when the driver died and his foot was still on the throttle, making the car to continue moving. As the car was about to crash, I just covered my face and brace for impact. I thought that at least, one should die as a fine boy.

“After the crash, the armed robbers came and ransacked all the bags in the car, looking for money. Today, I continue to remember that incident and I know that God kept me alive for a reason.”

Ayade pays Imams N10m over prayers for him

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has redeemed N10 million he pledged to the Council of Imams for praying for his electoral victory both at the polling booths in the 2015 election and at the Supreme Court in December 2016.

The Chairman of the Council of Imams and Scholars in the state, Major Kabiru Ibrahim Sa’ad who spoke with journalists in Calabar, said, “The governor has now redeemed the pledge he made to our council for the intensive prayers we all said which enabled him to come out victorious in the gubernatorial election of 2015 and at the Supreme Court, and we are very grateful to him.”

He said the Council of Imams and Scholars was founded in the state two years ago to unite the Muslim Ummah without bias to sect affiliation, adding that the council would continue to pray for Ayade and for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kidnappers abduct 5 Igbo traders in Calabar

At least Five Igbo businessmen have been abducted by hoodlums within three weeks in Calabar metropolis in Cross River causing fear among the Igbo community in the state.

Vanguard investigations revealed that while one Ifeanyi and Lazarus, spare parts dealers, were kidnapped two weeks ago, an electrical parts’ dealer and contractor popularly known as ‘But Why’ was whisked away on Monday.

The victims were said to have been kidnapped at their shops at Victor-Akan Street off Bedwell all in Calabar South.

Vanguard learned that while one Ifeanyi and Lazarus,both spare parts dealers, were kidnapped two weeks ago, an electrical dealer and contractor popularly known as ‘But Why’ was whisked away on Monday.

A family source told Saturday Vanguard that they have regained freedom after paying ransom of about 20 million naira.

However, the latest kidnapping of one popular Japanese spare parts dealer, Mr Paulinus Obi, popularly known as Matata, and Emmanuel Ozokwu a contractor have sent shivers down the spine of Igbo Community in Calabar.

Obi was kidnapped on Wednesday at Bedwell Street, while Ozokwu was whisked away on Thursday at Target Street all in Calabar South.

An eyewitness witness, Emeka Ofoegbu, said the Obi was kidnapped about 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 7, in front of his shop.

He said:“We were sitting out in front of Matata’s shop about 7:00pm having a drink and two young men wearing black all through walked up to Matata and excused him.As soon as he stood up another stern looking masked man came out from a parked old blue Audi 80 with AK 47 riffle and jerked Matata up and threw him into the car.

“Immediately the Audi 80 sped off with the three other persons, another Camry car parked down Bedwell by White House Street followed them and they zoomed off to unknown destination. Since then they have not called, neither have they sent any message as to the next thing we can do. Honestly, this is one kidnap too many and the traders would not take this matter lying low any longer.”

When contacted, the president of Igbo community in Calabar, Chief Albert Enya, described the incident as very unfortunate and called on security operatives to step up their activities in terms of patrol.

Enya who decried the incessant kidnap of Igbo business men, cautioned ‘Ndi Igbo to watch their back and be very cautious these days and promised that community would collaborate with the security operatives to find solution to the menace.

Confirming the kidnap of Mr Obi, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO,ASP Irene Ugbo, said they were aware of the kidnap and were on top of the situation as they were doing everything possible to ensure they were released.

“We are aware of the incident and we are doing our best to see to his release, we are not going to relent till they are released, and there shall be no hiding place for criminals in any part of Cross River state, “she assured.

Edo govt to construct 25 new roads

The Edo State Government has earmarked 25 new roads for construction across the state in the coming weeks, as it intensifies efforts to deliver projects that will transform the socio-economic landscape of the state.

Edo commissioning 75 airconditioned intracity buses in Benin

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie Esq., disclosed this during a chat with journalists, in Benin City, Edo State.

He said, “The state government led by Godwin Obaseki will deliver on its mandate to transform infrastructure across the state. In the coming weeks, 25 new roads have been earmarked for construction, by the state government.”

He added that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has provided leadership capable of transforming the state into an economic hub. “The governor knows how to pull resources for the benefit of a great majority of Edo people.

As an investment banker, he is someone who knows how to manage resources to drive socio-economic growth through infrastructural development.”

On the forthcoming local council polls, Ogie said that he has no doubt that candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will all be elected, noting “with the effort made by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Obaseki in transforming the state, I am confident that Edo people will vote massively for APC candidates at the polls.”

On security in the state, the SSG said the state government takes security of lives and property across the state seriously, which accounts for why it is considered as safest in the South-South region. “The increasing number of investors visiting the state is a pointer to the fact that the state has the best security arrangement in the region.

Embassies have security reports from every part of the country for foreign investors. That they indicate interest to do business in Edo shows that our security report is favourable for investors.”

He added that the state government will continue to improve on the security architecture and ensure investors get benefit from siting their companies in the state.

A Secondary School Student Was Tied Against A Pillar

A Senior School teacher wanted to punish a student for his misconduct. He had to use a rope to tie him to a pillar in the school compound.

It was made known that the student who was tied by the Senior teacher, was left there for several hours after he defaulted. The school name wasn’t revealed. Online users have been left in astonishment as to the kind of offense the student committed that he had to undergo such punishment.

Many people have condemned the act and have enjoined the police to investigate the matter.

Iyanya has Parted Ways With Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records

Singer, Iyanya Mbuk, has confirmed his exit from the Don Jazzy-led Mavin Records. TheKukere crooner disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview with Beat FM in Lagos.

Confirming his long-speculated exit from Mavin Records, he said, “I’m now signed to Temple Music but I’m a Mavin for life. It was not a beef. I was there and it was time to move on.”

Temple Music was launched in August 2017, with 9ice, Bisola Aiyeola, DJ Jimmy Jatt, named among the pioneer artistes.

Rumours were rife that the singer had moved on in November 2017. It was further fuelled after the label known for always tweeting and celebrating their artistes failed to wish the singer a happy birthday when he clocked 31. But, Don Jazzy wished him a happy birthday on his personal handle.

Speaking further during the radio interview, Iyanya explained why there’s been a “dramatic change” in his sound.

“I like to try new sounds,” he said, and attributed the change to “working with different producers, writers.”

“The fan base has grown; I have fans here and abroad. Some people like the new sound but some people are stuck in the old sound. Shout out to Don Jazzy. He influenced my new sound,” he said.

In August 2016, news broke that Iyanya had finally severed ties with his former friend and partner, Ubi Franklin, and was pitching his tent with the Mavin.

Up until his exit from Made Men Music, he was the biggest artiste on the platform. Franklin has since found a replacement in Tekno who is responsible for the hit, Pana.

At the time, Don Jazzy was quoted as saying that Iyanya had “recorded over 50 songs in less than three months”.

In 2017, Iyanya released ‘Signature’, an eight-track EP that included songs like ‘Up 2 Something’ and ‘Hold On’.

Don Jazzy and Mavin’s in-house producers, Altims and Baby Fresh, produced ‘Signature’.

Child Trafficking: 7 Suspects have been Caught by Police in Akwa Ibom State

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it has arrested seven suspects over their alleged involvement in child trafficking. This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Odiko Macdon, and made available to newsmen in Uyo.

Macdon said that the police, acting on intelligence, arrested one female, Eno Archibong Emah, who was alleged to have conspired with others to sell her baby boy for N400, 000.

The suspect, who hailed from Ikot Eman Itam in Itu Local Government Area, was said to have been arrested on Jan. 20.

“The suspect gave birth on Nov. 12, 2017, but conspired with one Emmanuel Okon and one Emem Asuquo Okon to sell her one-month-old child to one Kate, whose surname and address in Aba, Abia State are unknown.

“Operatives monitored and promptly arrested the mother of the child who later led the police to other accomplices in the illicit trade.

“The accomplices, Utibe Sunday John, ‘m’; Imo Ime Udoetuk, ‘m’; Friday John Amiang, ‘m’ and Uwana Ime, ‘f’, all confessed to the crime and revealed their individual roles in the offence.

“They also told us how the proceeds were shared amongst themselves,” he said.

According to the police spokesperson, the culprits have been arraigned in court.

Macdon also said that the command, on Jan. 27, also arrested four suspected armed robbers, alleged of robbing three young men along Nwaniba road in Uyo metropolis.

He said that the three men, all of Uni Uyo Permanent Site, stopped a patrol team at about 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, alleging that they had been robbed at gunpoint by occupants of one XTERA Jeep.

“The team swung into action and gave the robbers a hot chase to IBB road, by Nigerian Christian Institute (NCI), where one of the hoodlums, hanging at the door of their vehicle, exchanged gunshots with the police.

“The suspect was shot and fell off the vehicle while others drove off. “He was arrested and the sum of N18,830 was recovered from him.

“On Jan. 31, while on intensive patrol at about 3:00 a.m, the jeep was sighted at Mobil Filling Station, Oron Road by Uruan Street, Uyo with its four occupants arrested.

“On instant search, an extra number plate used during the robbery operation on January 27 was recovered in the pigeonhole of the jeep,” he said. The police spokesman said during the investigation, the suspects confessed to the crime and would soon be charged to court.

3 Teenagers have been Caught for Sleeping With a 14-year-old girl

Three teenagers who slept with a girl of 14-year-old secondary school pupil, have been detained by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The suspects are; Osamudiamen Stephen, Osabuohien Aghimien, and Victory Osayomwan were paraded at NSCDC headquarters after the victim of the family caught them.

Osabuohien, a mechanic apprentice, claimed the victim was his girlfriend, adding that he took her to the home of his friend for the night.

He said his friends made a request to have se.x with the girl and she agreed.

“I was there when they had se.x with her. When my friend said he wanted to go in again, she agreed. When I went to their home the next day, I was apprehended.

“My friend wanted to give her money, but I refused.”

Osamudiamen said the se.xual act occurred in his room.

He alleged that his friend told them the girl was a commercial se.x worker.

Osamudiamen said:

“He told us the girl is an ashawo (commercial se.x worker). So, we all slept with her. She did not cry at all. He said we should use her for the night. We did not give her money.”

Osayomwan said he asked the girl for se.x and she agreed.

NSCDC Commandant Makinde Iskil said the suspects would be handed over to the appropriate authorities.

Governor Vows to Punish Marketers Selling Fuel Above N145

El-Rufai said this on Monday, February 5, 2018, after the State Executive Council meeting.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has vowed to punish fuel marketers in Kaduna selling fuel above the official price of N145.

According to Daily Post, the Governor’s media aide, Samuel Aruwan said that security operatives have been asked to monitor filling stations in the state.

Governor El-Rufai also warned marketers against diverting petroleum products to black markets.

Aruwan, in a statement issued to newsmen also said that “government has directed the marketers and other stakeholders to ensure that petrol is sold at the official price of N145.

“Security agencies have been directed to monitor petrol stations day and night to ensure absolute compliance.

“Allocations to petrol stations would henceforth be announced in the media, and that government was collaborating with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to ensure availability of the product.

“The government extends its sincere apologies to the members of the general public following the scarcity and diversion of the products in the state.

“It is quite unfortunate and I want to assure our citizens that we are working round the clock to resolve the matter.

“I also want to make it clear that all petroleum marketers and other stakeholders must comply with the resolutions of the state executive council in view of this development.”

No plans to increase fuel price.

The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, has said that the Federal Government is not planning to increase the pump price of fuel.

A statement issued on Thursday, January 4, 2018 by the Director of Press in the ministry of petroleum, Idang Alibi, clarified the minister's submission made to the joint committee of the National Assembly on Petroleum Downstream.

Yesterday, the Lagos State Government has detained three pupils of Atunrashe High School, Mushin, for smoking and also in possession of Indian hemp and codeine.

The pupils were caught by officials of Lagos State Neighbourhood and Safety Corps (LNSC). LNSC officials found the three under-aged boys, whose names were withheld while smoking Indian hemp and using codeine in the Surulere area of Lagos from where they were then traced to their Secondary School.

Reacting to the development, the state Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri, said the state government would not condone illegality, adding that plans are at an advanced stage for them to be sent to a correctional home for reformation.

Bishop Umoh – “I love food a lot, I Can Cry For Food”

Actor, Imeh Bishop Umoh had a chat with Saturday Beats, has made it known that he is a foodie. Bishop says he enjoys food to a fault and he is delighted that nobody can deprive him his food because his mother taught him well on how to cook. He said if he was deprived of food, he would cry.

“I do chores; the once that interest me. I love food a lot. There is no food I cannot eat and once I crave a certain food, I cook it. I don’t place myself in a situation where someone would hold me to ransom by denying me food. You can do that with anything but if you try it with food, I can cry. I love food immeasurably. I thank God that I can cook anything. My mother taught me how to cook,” he said.

He told Saturday Beats that people often believed that he would be as dumb as the Okon character he plays in movies but that they are usually surprised to find out that he is a smart person. He said that despite the misconception, he has no point to prove to anyone that he is smart.

Citing an example he said, “There was a time when I was in the middle of a discussion with some people and I noticed a woman staring at me with her mouth wide open. She did not close her mouth or stop staring at me till I left the place and I knew it was because of the way I was handling the discourse intelligently.”

He further stated, “I don’t believe anyone is born dumb and for me, what you see on the television is different from reality. Like I always tell people, I have a dual personality; I have the domestic and commercial life. What you see on the television is the commercial aspect of me, but when you see me physically, that is my domestic side.

“You cannot deal with the commercial aspect of me for a whole day without being frustrated because Okon cannot take a single instruction without causing headache. It is an unrealistic comedy, it is called exaggerative humour. I give my artistic dexterity to the public, they love it and I laugh all the way to the bank.

“I have a good sense of humour but it is not exaggerative. I don’t wear bathroom slippers and sagging trousers around my house; neither do I climb the fence instead of using the gate or shout at any little thing that frightens me when my wife is around. It cannot happen because I am the husband and the man of the house. I play with our children. I am a loving husband.”
